Marriage Intensive
Marriage / Relationship Counseling
Couples seek marriage or premarital counseling for many reasons. For some, it is a last resort in trying to save a relationship. For others, it is an ongoing process of discovery, deeper connection, and growth.
As both a married couple and counselors, we bring a unique perspective to this work. With knowledge of relationships and therapeutic approaches—and with dependence on the Holy Spirit—we join you in pursuing the changes you desire.
Premarital counseling: We are SYMBIS-certified facilitators and offer structured premarital work to help couples build a strong foundation.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
People come to counseling for many reasons. Some seek help with concerns such as depression, anxiety, trauma-related distress, or other mental-health struggles. Others want support with life challenges, spiritual growth, personal goals, or simply a regular place to reflect and grow.
Phase of Life Changes
We help individuals and couples navigate life changes such as:
- Starting college
- Getting married
- Beginning a new job or career
- Having childrem
- Moving into the second half of life.
- Other significant shifts in family and purpose
Each season brings its own challenges and opportunities. Being in our 60s, we have lived through many of these phases. That experience helps us come alongside you as you explore, grieve, plan, and step into what is next.
FAMILY COUNSELING
When we work with families, we pay attention to generational patterns and how each person contributes to the family’s functioning—for better or for worse.
Working from a Family Systems framework, we help families reduce cut-off and fusion while increasing engagement. Learning how to tolerate the anxiety within relationships while engaging can be a challenging task and one that is vital in the healthy functioning of a family system.
When the concern centers on a child, we focus especially on supporting the parent or parents. Parental involvement is essential to a child’s growth and is a key part of the counseling process.
SEXUAL INTEGRITY
-
Many people seek help with sexual struggles—pornography, affairs, unwanted fantasies, or low desire.
-
Culture sends conflicting messages about sex, and it can be difficult to live in line with your own deepest values and faith. We offer a confidential, respectful place to explore these issues.
-
Together we look at beliefs, patterns, and the impact of environment, and we work toward greater integrity, healing, and healthier relationships.
-
This work is for both men and women.
-
Our aim is not merely behavior management, but congruence—living more fully in line with the values and hope that matter most to you, including the heart-level integrity Jesus pointed to in Matthew 5.
Coaching/Mentoring/spiritual Direction
We live with two horizons in view: the life we are living now, and the life still ahead.
The journey between them can be difficult.
Coaching, mentoring, and Biblical counseling are for people who want guidance and growth but are not primarily seeking clinical mental-health treatment.
John and Janet offer coaching and mentoring related to premarital and marriage concerns, life and career direction, and sexual integrity. John also offers spiritual direction.
These services are provided through a separate practice:
So Why John and Janet?
Research shows that a large part of progress in counseling comes from the quality of the relationship between client and counselor.
Training and experience also matter. John and Janet bring nearly 60 years of combined experience and training in a range of therapeutic approaches. They integrate these clinical skills with a Christian worldview of redemption—the biblical story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration.
This perspective offers a framework of hope, meaning, and whole-person healing as you work through life’s challenges

Insurance and Practical Notes
Licensed counseling.
People generally seek help from a licensed counselor to treat diagnosable issues such as depression or anxiety or personality issues. We’ll call this – “clinical”.
People also seek licensed counselors to help with challenges in life such as weight loss, spiritual growth, and accomplishing other personal or career goals. We’ll call this – “non-clinical”.
Clinical
Clinical can be viewed as getting back to a previous level of functioning or maintaining a desired level of functioning.
Sometimes we reach a point in our lives where old coping mechanisms don’t work as well as they did. Or we realize they really didn’t work. We become distressed.
There are many causes of personal distress, such as attachment to others and family systems. While others could be nutritional, substance abuse, and or sleep issues, to name a few.
Non-Clinical – LPSs can assist with non-clinical needs such as regular “check-ups” or general life challenges.

Insurance
LPCs fulfil many Insurance company’s licensing requirements for reimbursement. While we are not in-network providers, you may be able to use your out-of-network benefits for counseling. Contacting your insurance provider can give you the details related to your plan. Generally, insurance companies only reimburse for the treatment of diagnosible conditions (clinical) such as anxiety or depression; however, some do reimburse for relationship counseling.
Since we are licensed professional counselors, you can use most HSA funds for our services.
Here is an explanation of insurance laws.
